Overview

In the next activity, have students examine a map that has four ancient civilizations marked and respond to questions about the similarities of each civilization’s location. This activity will help students think about why civilizations develop near rivers. Ask them to respond to questions about what natural resources are needed to settle in a location.

After they  have completed the activity, ask students to watch a three-minute video about the changes that occurred as a result of farming. After watching the video using the quiz feature, have them submit answers to open-ended questions about how river valley civilizations supported farming and how that led to civilization.
