Password
This interactive strategy takes the form of a game in which students engage with targeted vocabulary. Students are challenged to practice vocabulary words by describing them to each other without using the word. The game's rounds progress from using several words, to one word, to no words—only pictures.
Password
Summary
Students take turns trying to get their group to say the Password (a given vocabulary word). This game is great for students who are somewhat familiar with the vocabulary words from the unit of study, but need a fun opportunity to practice using them.
Procedure
Divide students into groups of 3–4. Provide each group with the essential vocabulary words from the unit of study on cut-out cards or note cards.
Have students take turns drawing vocabulary words out of the pile.
Round 1: Students can use as many words as they’d like to describe their word. The only word they cannot use is the one on the card (the Password).
Round 2: Students can only use one word to describe the word on the card. The one word they use cannot is the word on the Password.
Round 3: Students cannot use any words. They may act out or draw the Password. However, they cannot simply write or "air-write" the Password.
Allow the students time to get through all of the vocabulary words in each round.
