As a class read the book "Tally O'Malley." A read aloud video can be found here.

Discuss as a class the following questions: "How did the O'Malley's keep track of the numbers they counted?" "How could we compare those numbers?"

Explain that today we are going to learn about how graphs can quickly tell us information about things we count.

Explore

Show the class an example graph using data from the Tally O'Malley story. As a class use the I Notice I Wonder strategy to talk about the different elements of the graph.

Sample Answers: "I notice that the cars are different colors. I wonder why they are different colors?" "I notice that the graph has words at the top. What do those words mean?" "I notice that there are ___ blue cars than red cars. Why are they different?"

Discuss as a class that the graph has information on it that tells us about the numbers of cars just by looking at the graph.
