Summary

A web resource for diagramming sentences by parts of speech.

Essential Question(s)

Description

This free web resource is a helpful aid in teaching students how to identify and label parts of speech in sentences. Within the resource students can type in their sentence and choose what label each word is, or if they are unsure, they can add multiple labels and the program will identify errors and suggest corrections. Teachers can also add their own grammar rules to the program’s prepopulated rules. This technology provides a fun way for students to parse sentences and identify parts of speech.

Procedure

  1. Provide sentences for students or have them create their own.

  2. Have students access the website by typing in the web URL https://lin-tree-solver.adambcomer.com/

  3. Click on “Sentence Editor” from the menu on the left.

  4. In the space provided under the heading “Sentence” have students type in their sentence.

  5. Underneath the full sentence it should be broken up by word with options for labels. See the linked “Key” for help understanding the labels. Consider reviewing the key with your students prior to the activity.

  6. Have students choose what labels they think each part of the sentence is.

  7. Afterwards, have them click on “Tree Viewer” from the menu on the left to see if their selections were correct and how it looks in “tree” form.
