Summary
STAR stands for Situation, Task, Action, and Result, providing a systematic framework for describing experiences and achievements. With this strategy students will identify a situation, explain the tasks required of them, describe the actions they took to complete the tasks, and then explain the results. After responding to each prompt, students should be building off their previous answers and developing a more nuanced understanding of how their actions towards a specific task can transfer to other contexts. STAR helps individuals articulate their skills and competencies clearly and concisely during interviews or when sharing accomplishments. This strategy may be used in classes such as ELA, Leadership, Social Studies, and any other college or career readiness course.
Procedure
Based on the context of your class, have students brainstorm tasks they have accomplished and want to transfer to a resume or articulate in an interview.
From their brainstorming list, have students use the attached handout to consider a specific experience or situation from their school, extracurricular activities, or personal life.
Next, have students clearly define their role in the chosen situation and outline the specific tasks or responsibilities they undertook.
Then, prompt students to describe their actions to complete the task or fulfill their role. Note: this section should have the most details and take up the majority of their time.
Lastly, have students reflect on the results of their actions.
