Card
Sentence Scramble
Students review prior knowledge about sentence creation and punctuation by rearranging sentence cards.
Sentence Scramble
Summary
Students will organize premade sentence cards into grammatically correct sentences with accurate punctuation marks. As students work together to sort the cards, they justify their own ideas, consider others' ideas, and modify their thinking as new information is presented. This strategy can be used to assess new vocabulary, syntax, and elaboration skills.
Procedure
Begin by preparing a set of cards (see attached template) that align with the content goal of the lesson. Create the cards to include words that might work in each sentence and the punctuation marks needed to create an accurate sentence.
Divide students into pairs.
Encourage them to lay out each card in a row so that it is easy to see how they form a sentence.
Student groups must come to a common agreement that the sentence is correct.
Ask pairs to share out how they know their sentence is correct.
The cards you create can be as simple or as complex as needed. You can leave blank cards for students to fill in the gaps of sentences, if you prefer.
