Lights, Camera, Action!
Summary
A peer review strategy used to provide specific, actionable feedback that students can immediately apply to their writing. Lights: Shine a light on all the things your peer did well and excelled at. Camera: Zoom in and focus on points of improvement in the writing. Action: Suggest two action steps your peer could take to improve their writing.
Procedure
Place students into pairs
Pass out the Lights, Camera, Action! handout to each student.
Have students exchange assignments with each other.
Provide time for students to read each other’s assignments.
Instruct students to first “shine a light” on what their partner did well at (ex. structure, evidence, analysis).
Next, have students “zoom” in on points of improvement in their partner’s assignment. Take this time to provide students with examples of weaknesses you might look for while grading.
Lastly, ask students to provide two “action” steps. These are suggestions they should make to help their partner’s improve their work.
Have students return their peer’s assignment and review their feedback with each other.
