Students use common social media conventions to illustrate the main idea of a lesson, concept, or text that summarizes their understanding.

Summary

A general social media post format helps students summarize key ideas by drawing on conventions found across multiple platforms. Features like short character limits encourage concise writing, and images support visual connections to the content. Hashtags prompt students to identify essential keywords or themes. The structure is flexible so that teachers can adapt it to their lesson goals. The accompanying template offers examples of different conventions students can use. This strategy can be used to activate prior knowledge of a topic, connect concepts to personal experiences and authentic application, or connect concepts across content areas.

Procedure

  1. Present students with a reading, concept, text, or other prompt for response.

  2. Determine what social media convention(s) you want students to use (e.g. image, hashtag, long post, or word limit post). Share the convention with students and/or adapt the provided template handout for them.

  3. Have students research or create an image/post that captures their understanding of the main idea from the prompted materials.

  4. (Optional) Have students write a hashtag that connects their image/post to the prompt and summarizes their understanding.

  5. (Optional) Have students “publish” their post to the classroom page.
