Tutoring Tool Kit: Goal Review

Sherry Franklin, Karen Scheaffer | Published: August 22nd, 2025 by K20 Center

Summary

In this resource, students celebrate their progress and successes during tutoring sessions. Students also have the opportunity to reflect on the goals they set for tutoring.

Learning Goals

  • Guide students to reflect on the progress they made this semester.

  • Discuss the next steps students can make to continue their academic growth.

  • Celebrate all that students have learned and accomplished.

Materials List

  • Goal Review Facilitator’s Guide document (attached)

  • My Goal Sheet handout (one per student; handout from the previous session, “Tutoring Tool Kit: Relationship Building and Goal Setting”)

Guiding Notes

Begin the session by asking each student how their class is going or how it ended. Invite them to share their thoughts on completing their course, including their thoughts on their academic progress and personal experiences.

Encourage each student to reflect on not only their academic performance, but also on the skills they developed and their feelings throughout the semester. These skills could include time management, confidence, or persistence.

Ask each student if they know their final exam grade and their overall course grade. Use this discussion as an opportunity to celebrate progress and identify areas for continued growth.

Follow up on any strategies discussed in previous sessions. Ask each student if they’ve developed any new processes.

Before wrapping up the session, check in with the student to make sure they don’t have remaining questions or concerns. Offer encouragement and remind them that support is always available.

Discussion Starters

Consider beginning the discussion by asking the following questions:

  • How are you feeling about your course?

  • How do you feel this semester went?

Discussion Questions

To guide this week’s discussion, consider asking the following questions:

  • Did you meet the goal you set for yourself in this course?

  • What did you do well this semester?

  • What is something you learned in tutoring that has been helpful?

  • What did you learn about yourself while completing this course?

  • What was the most interesting thing you learned?

  • What changes can you make for next semester?

Next Steps

Remind students to:

  • Celebrate all the hard work they put into the course.

  • Reach out to school staff if they would like to continue tutoring sessions in the future.
