This strategy provides an opportunity for students to interact with vocabulary and practice writing. Given nine academic vocabulary terms related to a unit, students select terms that connect and use them to write a paragraph.

Summary

Given a grid with nine academic vocabulary terms related to a unit of study, students select words or phrases that connect horizontally, vertically, or diagonally. Students then write a paragraph with their chosen terms. The grid may contain people, places, events, dates, and concepts. For a possible variation of this strategy, students may create their own grids for their peers to respond to in paragraph form.

Procedure

  1. Create a tic-tac-toe grid with nine spaces.

  2. Fill each space on the grid with a vocabulary word or phrase. Consider leaving a blank space for each student to add one word or phrase of their own.

  3. Provide a grid to each student and have them draw a horizontal, vertical, or diagonal line that connects three words. For longer writing assignments, consider having students draw two or more lines. By drawing two lines, for example, students can connect up to six words.

  4. Have each student write a paragraph that includes the words or phrases they have selected.

  5. Have each student share their paragraph with a peer. Consider having students review one another’s paragraphs as a class using an online content-sharing tool such as Padlet.
