Take a Chance

In this strategy, students roll a die to determine how many words to use in order to answer a prompt.

Take a Chance

Summary

This strategy is a great way to get students to synthesize their thoughts. Students are divided into groups and given one die. The teacher provides the students with a prompt, and they take turns rolling the die and using the number to represent the number of words used to answer the question. This is a great strategy to use after a lesson or to assist students in naming thoughts, words, and feelings.

Procedure

  1. Determine the prompt(s) students will be answering. Open-ended questions work best with this strategy.

  2. Divide students into groups of 4-6.

  3. Provide each group with 1 die.

  4. Provide the class with the first open-ended question.

  5. When it is their turn, each student rolls the die and reads the number. This number represents the total number of words they can use to answer the question.

  6. If you choose, students can double rolls of 1 or 4.

  7. Students continue rolling until all members of the group have answered the question.

  8. Repeat until all the questions have been answered.
