Roots and Routes
This strategy aids students in breaking down and understanding a topic by identifying the necessary conditions (roots) and steps (leaves) required to achieve a final outcome. It involves analyzing the components and actions integral to the process and guides their route to a satisfying conclusion.

Summary
This instructional strategy helps students determine the conditions and actions needed for a specific end result. This can be an event from history, steps to solve a math equation, or project planning. Students work individually or in small groups to complete the attached template. Students will start with the conditions, or roots, of the topic and move up the stem with action steps, or leaves (the route they are going to take), to achieve the end result of a flower.
Procedure
Provide students with a blank sheet of notebook paper or a copy of the attached template. If using blank paper, have students draw a flower with roots and leaves.
Determine a topic that requires specific conditions and action steps (ex. planning a project, an event in history, a natural phenomenon).
Have students write the topic in the center of the flower.
Around the roots, have students list all the conditions needed for the topic, event, or project to take root.
Next, have students write at least three action steps that are influenced by the conditions that must take place for the topic to bloom.
(optional) Have students compare their answers with others and harvest additional conditions or actions they may not have considered.
