Peer Teaching

Summary

This strategy encourages students to teach and learn from each other, promoting active engagement and deeper understanding of the content by positioning students as topic experts. Peer Teaching builds communication and leadership skills, such as active listening and student ownership of learning. This collaborative approach fosters a supportive environment through constructive collaboration and feedback, while increasing the motivation and confidence of learners.

Procedure

  1. Have students review the provided prompts or resources along with all other necessary materials.

  2. Share presentation expectations. As students work on their presentations, walk around the room and offer support throughout the process.

  3. Have groups establish each member’s roles by having each member choose a different segment from the resource to learn and prepare to teach.

  4. Provide a time limit for each group to present their entire resource. Have students determine necessary modifications and time allotments for each presenter based on the given time.

  5. Have students work individually to make modifications to their sections and develop relevant presentation slide(s) to suit their personal styles.

  6. Have students present their sections within their groups. As each person presents, have their peers take notes of positive features or modifications to consider.

  7. After all presentations are finished, have students share constructive feedback with one another.

  8. Lead a whole-group discussion and encourage students to reflect on the activity. Use this discussion as an opportunity to assess students’ overall knowledge gained on the topic.
