Symphony of Sentences

Use this strategy as a warm-up for deeper analysis or conversation to ensure that all voices are heard and to create a cohesive and reflective discussion.

Symphony of Sentences

Summary

This strategy helps create richer and more equitable discussions by establishing a foundation that everyone has helped build. Each individual first gives a brief contribution in the form of a sentence, and then the discussion launches into a deeper collective understanding.

Procedure

  1. Provide participants with a clear focus for their sentence. For example, “

Choose one sentence from the reading that stood out to you" or

"Summarize your main thought or takeaway in one sentence."

  2. Each person takes a turn sharing their sentence aloud.

  3. After all sentences have been shared, allow a brief moment for participants to reflect on themes or connections they notice.

  4. Transition into an open discussion. Use the shared sentences as jumping-off points. For example,

"What connections or patterns do you notice in our sentences?" or

"Is there a particular idea you'd like to explore further?"
