Deep Read

A comprehensive reading strategy where students read the entire passage first to understand and summarize before answering any questions.

Deep Read

Summary

The Deep Read allows students to move quickly through a passage and retain structure, tone, and key ideas. This strategy prioritizes comprehension up front, allowing students to tackle questions with minimal backtracking. It's ideal for students who are comfortable summarizing and drawing conclusions without relying on repeated close reading.

Procedure

  1. Begin by asking students to read the entire passage, pausing at the end of each paragraph to create a summary or hashtag phrase in their own words.

  2. Then have students go to the questions and answer as many as they can without looking back. Instruct them to use the process of elimination to narrow down choices.

Exception: For vocabulary-in-context questions, students need to use the line reference and plug each choice into the sentence to see which fits.

Emphasize to students that they shouldn’t linger too long on any single question. If they are plugging every choice into every sentence, they are wasting time. Tell them to trust their reading.
