Drawn Together

This is a collaborative string-drawing challenge that requires teamwork to create a shared image.

Drawn Together

Summary

This activity encourages students to communicate, coordinate, and problem-solve as they collaborate to maneuver a shared marker and draw images together. Designed for small groups, the challenge encourages students to plan, make adjustments, and reflect on what helps or hinders teamwork.

Procedure

  1. Prep

    1. Cut four pieces of string, about 25 inches each.

    2. Cut a three-inch piece of tape. Place the four strings on the tape, spacing them out evenly.

    3. Place a marker on top of the tape and strings.

    4. Wrap the tape around the marker to secure the strings.

  2. Activity Instructions

    1. Divide students into groups of four. Give each student one string end.

    2. Have students pull on their string so that the marker stands upright.

    3. Challenge groups to draw a simple image (e.g., a smiley face). Allow three minutes for this first round.

    4. After the first round, pause to discuss.

      1. What strategies did groups use?

      2. What worked well?

      3. What could they improve?

    5. Play another round with a different image (laptop, ID card, notebook, cap and gown, etc.).

    6. Discuss how this relates to collaboration.
