Concept One-Pager

This assessment tool encourages students to express their learning on a single page using both text and imagery. This strategy has students blend drawings, doodles, quotes, questions, and personal insights into a thorough summary of their understanding of a concept.

Concept One-Pager

Summary

This instructional strategy is a flexible tool that can be used as a summative assessment and adapted for a formative assessment. The Concept One-Pager strategy has students synthesize and communicate important themes or key concepts of a work, unit, or other grouping of content. As students think critically about what information to include in their one-page summary, they are increasing their retention of content. Students can create Concept One-Pagers in a variety of content areas. For example, across different subjects, students could draw flags to show the opposing sides of a historical war, sketch plant life from an ecosystem, or illustrate a scene from a story to convey the theme.

Procedure

  1. Select a concept you want students to summarize in a Concept-One Pager.

  2. Determine the text and visual elements that you want students to include. These elements could include a heading, quotes from primary sources, key vocabulary terms, prompt response expectations, a drawing of a lead character or key scene from a story or event, drawing of a related symbol, etc.

  3. Clearly communicate expectations with students. Assure students that they are not being evaluated based on their artistic skills, but rather on the detail put into their design. Consider sharing your own example as a guide.

  4. Allow students time to plan what they want to include on their pages. Share that student must arrange elements intentionally, create meaningful drawings, and avoid leaving unused space on the page.

  5. Provide students with the supplies and time needed for their creation. Supplies will likely include blank paper, pens for writing text, and coloring utensils.
