This strategy is used to help students synthesize and summarize information in a clear and concise manner.

Tweet Up

Summary

Students write a summary statement in the form of a tweet, using 140 characters or less, that includes a hashtag to identify the main idea of a lesson, concept, or text(s). This strategy can also be used to help students form short opinion statements that can be used later as thesis statements in longer form writing.

Procedure

After a lesson or reading, a question related to the new information is posed to students.
Students answer the question with a tweet—a 140-character answer that includes a hashtag to summarize the main idea in one short word or phrase. (e.g., A man who polices ideas opens his mind to the very things he's charged with protecting the world from in Fahrenheit 451. #censorshipisbad) Spaces and punctuation count toward the character count.
Once complete, tweets can be shared out, posted around the room for a Gallery Walk, or posted on a class social media page among other things.
