Summary

Students will investigate the history and the contributions to the art world made by the Kiowa six. Through also exploring the history of these Kiowa children, students will discern the impact of acculturation and assimilation of Native American children into a white dominant society through the boarding school system.

What is the legacy of the Kiowa six? How did acculturation support or discourage the work of the Kiowa six?

Engage

Students are introduced to a painting. They make observations, create questions, and make a prediction about the painting and artist.

Explore

Students watch a video and revise their original observations.

Explain

Students are given one of two readings. Students work together to synthesize the information of the readings using an H Chart method.

Extend

Student groups create an art analysis poster of one painting by a Kiowa Six member.

Evaluate

Students write a letter to the governor sharing the contributions made by Kiowa Six to Oklahoma and suggesting a way to remember the Kiowa Six’s legacy further.

Engage

Introduce students to the lesson objectives and essential questions of the lesson (slides ). Pass out the 3-2-1 handout found in the attachments. Discuss the directions of the 3-2-1 activity with the class.

Display slide ________. Tell students to observe the painting and complete the handout. Allow ten to fifteen minutes for this activity.
