Last One Standing
A bell ringer strategy that can be employed as either an icebreaker or as a means of activating prior knowledge, Last One Standing has students answer a question in a novel way.
Last One Standing
Summary
Last One Standing is a quick, fun way to implement a multiple choice question into daily routines. This can be used as an icebreaker question at the beginning of the school year or as a short content review to activate prior knowledge at the start of class. Since the activity has all students sit at their desks, it can also be a way to help with class focus.
Procedure
Using the supplied PowerPoint template, make a slideshow with five slides. The title slide should have the instructions.
On the next slide, have the question centered in the slide and have each of the four answers in a separate corner. Each subsequent slide should remove one of the erroneous answers.
While presenting the slides in slideshow mode, have students stand and commit to one answer on the screen. Students needing accommodations may raise their hands instead of standing. After they decide, students can be asked to share their rationale.
Move through the slides slowly and ask students to sit down if their answer falls off the screen. The last group standing has the correct answer.
