Squiggles

Squiggles is a creative writing strategy in which students receive a random squiggly line and create a picture from it. After students complete their image, they write about what they drew.

Squiggles

Summary

This strategy is a fun and engaging way to inspire creativity in writing and get students thinking outside the box.

Procedure

  1. Pass out a squiggly line to each student or have students copy a squiggle from the board.

  2. Give students 5 minutes to add to the squiggle and turn it into a picture of their choosing.

  3. Have students write one word, one sentence, or one paragraph about their picture, depending on their grade level.

  4. Have students pair up. Each student should ask one question about their partner’s picture.

  5. Using that question, have each student add to their picture and corresponding word, sentence, or paragraph to provide more clarity and details.
