CommonLit

CommonLit is a free online literary resource. This digital library hosts a huge inventory of news articles, poems, and short stories. In addition to various literary texts, CommonLit also offers several filters and tools, including an annotation tool, a text-to-speech option, an embedded dictionary, and guided questions.

Summary

CommonLit is a standards-based resource for ELA and ELL teachers. Filter over 2,000 titles by grade level, Lexile range, genre, theme, standard, or literary device to find what you need. Set up an account to assign reading passages or activities and track student progress through the teacher dashboard. CommonLit also provides assessment options and differentiation tools.

Procedure

Accessing CommonLit's library does not require that you create an account in order to take advantage of its library. Simply visit commonlit.org and select "Browse Content" near the top of the homepage and select a category to find a passage.

To take advantage of all the tools:

  1. Navigate to CommonLit.

  2. Select "Login" to access an existing account, or select "Sign up" to create a new account.

  3. Select "My Classes" > "Manage Classes."

  4. Select "Create a new class manually." Alternatively, you can import students from Google Classroom.

  5. Add students by creating an account for them or instruct them to use the class code provided to add themselves.

  6. Browse the selection.

  7. Select the "Assign" button to select a class or individual students.
