Scenario Solutions

Scenario Solutions is a collaborative instructional strategy that asks learners to analyze a realistic scenario and generate responses, actions, or solutions that align with a specific goal, expectation, or desired outcome. Learners evaluate the situation, discuss possible responses, and justify their reasoning. This strategy promotes critical thinking, problem-solving, communication, collaboration, and application of content knowledge.

Scenario Solutions

Summary

Scenario Solutions helps learners connect concepts, skills, and expectations to authentic situations. By examining realistic scenarios and determining appropriate responses, learners practice analysis, decision-making, and solution generation while considering multiple perspectives and possible outcomes.

Procedure

  1. Present learners with a realistic scenario, situation, or challenge related to the learning objective.

  2. Provide a clear task, goal, question, or desired outcome. Examples include:

    • What should happen next?

    • How should this problem be solved?

    • Which response best supports the goal?

    • What action would improve the situation?

    • What advice would you give?

  3. Allow learners to work individually, in pairs, or in small groups to analyze the scenario.

  4. Learners discuss and generate one or more responses or solutions.

  5. Learners justify their thinking using evidence, reasoning, prior knowledge, or course content.

  6. Facilitate a whole-group discussion in which learners share, compare, and evaluate responses.

  7. Debrief by connecting learner responses back to the lesson objectives, content, skills, or desired outcomes.
